It's a Launch Day Party! Here Comes Theodosia and the Eyes of Horus

Congratulations to our very own R. L. LaFevers!

THEODOSIA AND THE EYES OF HORUS
R. L. LaFevers
Illustrated by Yoko Tanaka
Houghton Mifflin Books for Children
Ages 9-12
Hardcover, 374 pages
April 12, 2010

Being able to detect black magic isn’t all tea and crumpets—and for Theodosia Throckmorton, it can be a decidedly tricky business! When Sticky Will drags Theo to a magic show featuring the Great Awi Bubu, she quickly senses there is more to the magician than he lets on, setting in motion a chain of events she never could have bargained for.
Meanwhile, back at the Museum of Legends and Antiquities, Henry is home for the spring holidays and makes an accidental discovery of an artifact that alchemists have been hunting for centuries. Soon, every black-cloaked occultist in London is trying to get their hands on it . . . (excerpt from jacketflap)

"Theodosia Throckmorton, first appearing in Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos (2007), returns in another fantastical romp, steeped in ancient Egyptian lore and set in Edwardian England. With villains from previous series installments still at large, a new threat is added to the mix: the Arcane Order of the Black Sun, a secret society focused on the occult. Once again, supernaturally talented Theodosia navigates around her etiquette-obsessed grandmother and absentminded parents in a suspenseful, satisfying fantasy that’s filled with the specifics of magical ritual sure to delight readers who miss the goings-on at Hogwarts-"-Booklist
At the risk of sending her running to the nearest draperies to bury herself in embarrassment, I must tell you what a rousing success this series has been! The first Theodosia book garnered a Junior Library Guild Selection, a Booksense Summer Pick, was an Agatha Award Nominee, a West Virginia Children's Book Award nominee, and a Michigan Library Association Mitten Award Honor Title. School Library Journal described the her Theodosia as a "...combination of Nancy Drew and Indiana Jones." Theo II landed her on the Indie Kids What's Next List. And the Eyes of Horus throbs with promise and excitement! And don't even get me started on her Beastologist series. The girl is taking off!

Robin's Launch Day Plans:
WON'T BE: Launching from a plane. Ever again. She swears.
WILL BE: Celebrating with us, of course! I've made legions of tasty scorpion cookies and there is plenty of Yummy Mummy Cake for the whole tribe. Pull up a sarcophagus and dig in!
Robin also plans on spreading "Library Love" far and wide. She shares her launch day with the beginning of National Library Week, which starts Monday. She is off to the TLA (Texas Library Association) Annual Conference bright and early Tuesday, where she will be speaking, signing, and performing all kinds of her special magic.
To honor and support both school and public libraries, hit hard by the trying economic times, Robin would like to donate her author copies. As part of our festivities here today, we are inviting you to nominate your favorite school or public library. Robin will randomly select ten winners from your entries, who will receive a copy of Theodosia and the Eyes of Horus, and a paperback copy of Theodosia and the Staff of Osiris. And, if the library doesn't have the first Theo book, she will throw in a copy of Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos to complete their set.
The **Grand Prize** winning library will win $100.00 in cash to purchase any books of their choice. All you need to do to nominate your library is to leave a comment on today's post.
You can read more about Theo and all her extraordinary adventures at Robin's website, or you can visit Theo at her own personal blog.

Violets and Vinnies, please join me congratulating Robin on her next installment of this terrific series. Long live Theo!
Now, c'mon, pony right up-- please don't leave us with all this cake! Don't forget to hug a library this week. A set of Theo books would be a lovely gift. Nominate them-- right now!
.............................................
Contest News: Our reader Liz (and first-time commenter) is the winner of Deanna Raybourn's new novel, The Dead Travel Fast. Congrats, Liz! If you'll email Robin off-line, she'll get that right out to you.
............................................
Wishing you each happy and successful launches of all kinds this week--
Mary Hershey

Yay on the launch!!! And yay on library support. And in that spirit...

I nominate the Larchmont Charter School library right here in Los Angeles. A school full of readers, and no Theo in sight! It's wrong, I tell you. Wrong.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! Woot!
I've just been dying for this book to come out. I love this series so much.

What a fabulous idea, to give away author copies! The Benicia Public Library is in an underfunded country, and could really use a copy to circulate amongst its member branches.

I nominate my son's old elementary school, Lakeside Elementary--only 80-some students, and they still manage to have a full, functioning library. They have some great readers & I know Theo's books would be a great hit.

And congratulations, Robin! You've been working so hard--this must feel great. :)

Happy launching! Scorpion cookies for everyone!

If my entry is picked, I will choose one of the people who participated in my library blog challenge at the end of last month, and donate the books to a deserving library from that list.

Our school, Pleasant Ridge Elementary, has undergone funding cuts too, so I made it a point to do the book fairs to support the library. I'd love to be able to give them a direct gift!

And mucho congrats, Robin!!!!

Ellwood School! Can't wait to read #3. Such an amazing series. I've been telling my students that #3 is on it's way. They are very excited. One of my students said, "I'm going to re-read Serpents of Chaos and Staff of Osiris" before I read #3."

I checked our local library and it is already PACKED with R.L. LaFevers titles. Ten of them, including the EYES OF HORUS on order. The William T. Cozby library in Coppell, Texas loves you, Robin! So I'll defer nominating a library and just say congratulations and have a brilliant book launch!
